SUN
From the ‘Funk Capital’ of the world DAYTON, OHIO USA comes one of the most celebrated funk groups of all time … ‘SUN’.
The group ‘SUN’ are true innovators and influencers in the music industry in Funk, Soul, R&B, Hip Hop and Rap, launching ‘hit-making’ musicians into some of the music industry’s most popular Gold & Platinum selling groups such as The Ohio Players, Earth Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Heatwave, etc. ‘SUN’s’ songs have been sampled and used by Dr. Dre plus many other Hip Hop and Rap Legends.
International hit songs by ‘SUN’ include: ‘Wanna Make Love (Come Flick My Bic)’ featuring **Roger Troutman, ‘Sun is Here’, ‘I Had a Choice’, ‘Conscience’, ‘Radiation Level’ … more.
Capitol Records Albums of ‘SUN’ are: Wanna Make Love, Sun Power, Sunburn, Destination Sun, Sun Over the Universe, Force of Nature, Let There Be Sun, Eclipse, Sun’s Greatest Hits, Best of Sun.
‘SUNs’ original stage show (with the use of robots as special FX by the Oscar-winners for Star Wars) was comparable to the fantastic stage performances of ‘Earth, Wind, and Fire’ and ‘Parliament Funkadelic’ in which ‘SUN’ has toured with several times.
‘SUN’ and group ‘Heatwave’ have had several decades of direct association through members of ‘SUN’ also performing simultaneously as lead singers and members of ‘Heatwave’ for many years with the late Keith Wilder. RIP
Byron Byrd (founder on ‘SUN’) has produced a multitude of songs for artists such as: Marvin Gaye, Manfred Mann, Bob Marley, The Ohio Players, Michael Rose, Half Pint, Jocelyn Brown, Yazz, Robert Guillaume, Jaki Graham, Liberty, … more.
‘Wanna Make Love (Come Flick My Bic)’ by ‘SUN’ was the first international hit song that the legendary Roger Troutman used the talkbox on.
**Detailing the experience further, Roger himself relates, “What I remember is Byron telling me and Lester how he wanted the track to go, and Beau Ray making quick , strong suggestions. Nowadays, the voicebox is something people know of and call me to put in a song. But twenty years ago, you can imagine how ridiculous I looked totin’ that thing around trying to advocate it for a record. When I was first trying to make records with it, people were like, ‘I can’t understand a word you’re sayin’. Sounds like you’ve got something’ in yo’ mouth! That ain’t sangin’!’ Once I got it set up and gave them a reasonable facsimile of what it would sound like, they were like, ‘Hey, let’s put this down!’ I’m appreciative to Byron, who has always been very, very cool. He had a wide variety of pickers and drummers to choose from in Dayton back then, and he chose us.”
